Rosario would have the game of his life a few days later in Game 4, earning four additional hits and coming close to hitting for the cycle. (His final time up, he needed a double, but instead homered for the second time in the game.) With a three-run homer just inside the right-field foul pole in Game 6, he broke up a tight 1-1 tie, and Truist Park erupted in a stunning thunder of shouting, followed by a “Eddie! Eddie!” chorus.
“He’s been pretty much fantastic this whole playoffs,” Freeman added.
That’s all part of baseball’s fantastic, strange, and random character. Rosario, a terrific but momentarily undesired player who wouldn’t have been a Brave if Atlanta’s opening-day outfield hadn’t been disbanded, finds a home and becomes the hottest person at just the perfect time.
“At this point, I sort of want more,” Rosario remarked after Game 4. “I’m simply waiting for the next thing to happen.”

The Braves’ pennant chances actually declined the next day, for the first time since Game 1 of the NLDS. The Dodgers’ jaw-dropping late-game comeback, in which they scored four runs to take the lead in the eighth inning, seemed to be a series-shifting move. The Braves’ pennant chances slipped to 56 percent after a 6-5 Los Angeles victory highlighted by Cody Bellinger’s game-tying three-run homer on a ball so high he had to almost jump in the air to reach it.
It wasn’t simply the Dodgers’ rally’s momentum change and the Braves’ missed opportunity to take a 3-0 lead. The Dodgers were throwing Julio Urias, a 20-game winner, in Game 4, while the Braves were planned a bullpen game.
Since the start of the playoffs, though, something remarkable has been happening in the Atlanta bullpen. Snitker has entrusted his late-inning fortunes to the bullpen combination of Tyler Matzek (M), Luke Jackson (J), and Will Smith (S), and the strategy has proven to be more successful than anybody could have predicted.
Prior to the arrival of those three in the late innings, the intention was to start regular-season starter Huascar Ynoa and give him at least a couple of innings. However, Ynoa was withdrawn off the roster after showing up with shoulder soreness on game day.
Despite this, Atlanta triumphed 9-2, establishing a commanding 3-1 lead and putting the Braves on the verge of a World Series appearance in a game without a starting pitcher. Rosario’s near-triple didn’t hurt, but the Braves’ bullpen delivered a memorable effort.
It was a performance that featured two-thirds of M.J.S. (Matzek and Smith each pitched one inning) and didn’t require Snitker to use any of his big three starters in relief (unlike Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, whose use of Max Scherzer in Game 5 of the NLDS may have contributed to his team’s defeat to the Braves). Instead, Snitker has been able to replicate the Kansas City Royals’ blueprint from the 2014-15 season. Snitker has switched Matzek and Jackson’s appearance order on few occasions, but the three has worked together throughout October and shows no signs of tiring.
The M.J.S. bullpen has combined for a sub-1.00 ERA and a sub.150 batting average allowed in the playoffs, with Matzek playing in almost every game.

Even in an NLCS in which the Dodgers were generally lifeless and lusterless, Game 5 brought them back to life. In Game 5, Chris Taylor blasted three home runs, A.J. Pollock added two more, and L.A. cruised to an 11-2 victory. The Braves’ chances of winning the World Series dropped to 61 percent after the defeat, albeit that statistic was perhaps a touch low since the Dodgers were losing crucial players at a quicker rate than the Black Knight from “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.”
Even though the Braves emphasized that this year’s club is different from last year’s, questions about Atlanta’s collapse from a 3-1 series lead against the Dodgers resurfaced. It’s a completely different team than it was in the first half of the season.

Then, with a three-run blast to right, barely over the wall and inside the foul pole, NLCS MVP Rosario lit up the stadium. But it was enough to for Cobb County, Georgia to erupt in what may have been the loudest scream ever heard.
The other parts also had a role. A.J. Minter came in and pitched two flawless electric innings before the M.J.S. bullpen could even get started. With the tying runners in scoring position, Matzek struck out three successive batters. Mookie Betts, the previous MVP, was the last of the three. Freeman didn’t play hero ball in what might have been his greatest game ever. Instead, he took the four walks that were available.
And Smith brought it to a close with a spectacular play by Dansby Swanson on an A.J. Pollock grounder.
And, despite the fact that the Atlantans crammed into every nook and cranny of Truist Park and made a lot of noise, they didn’t go up to bat, throw a pitch, or field a grounder. Their presence, though, was felt. That was a far cry from last year, when the Braves lost a three-run lead in front of three mainly deafening audiences in Arlington, Texas.
Those Braves fans will now be able to see the first World Series games played in Cobb County, and the first in the Atlanta region since manager Bobby Cox and his team dominated the game.
They’ll get to see them not because of a hot athlete or a successful organizational strategy. They’ll notice them because their team has developed, one step at a time, putting one foot in front of the other, striving to discover the route to the destination that every team desires.
