ALLEN PARK, Mich. (WXYZ) – Despite being more than 2,000 miles away from Los Angeles, Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff couldn’t disguise his “sourness” at the lack of communication in his trade from the Los Angeles Rams.
However, as the former Rams star prepares to return to SoFi Stadium on the other side, he won’t allow the reunion distract him from his primary goal: to help the 0-6 Lions win their first game on Sunday.
“To summarize, it will be nice to see all of those folks and to be present. Of course, you’re fired up. You do, after all, have a chip on your shoulder. “I’ve spoken about that,” Goff said after practice on Wednesday. “There was some sourness towards the finish, and you still feel it, and you still have that chip on your shoulder, but when the game begins, if I allow any of that influence how I play the game, it’ll be selfish.”
“And I’m going to play the game like any other game,” he said, “and to be honest, I’m not concerned about feeling anything once the game begins.” “I’m sorry, but I don’t.”
In March, the Lions dealt Matthew Stafford to the Rams for Goff, a third-round pick in 2021, and first-round picks in 2022 and 2023. Stafford has the Rams on a five-game winning streak, while the Lions are the only club in the league without a victory.
“There are certain emotions that come with being the quarterback for an organization — truly, both of them for a period of time — but I don’t care who you are,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said. “There is an aspect of — there are mixed feelings, man, when you’ve played for a team for a lot of years and then you go to face them again.”

The deal was arranged by first-year Lions general manager Brad Holmes, who had worked for the Rams from 2003 to 2010, most recently as director of college scouting, and was aimed towards the franchise’s future.
On Monday, Rams coach Sean McVay expressed remorse about the way the transaction with Goff to Detroit went down. McVay expressed his want for “better, clearer communication,” which Goff now admits was lacking. Goff was taken aback by the decision after having had no communication with McVay or the Rams from the conclusion of the season until the trade call.
“Yes, sir. I really appreciate it. To say anything like that, it takes a guy “McVay, according to Goff. “So, absolutely, I’m grateful. Even if things went down the way they did, I appreciate his expressing that and have the utmost regard for him over there.”
Goff claims that the public impression of his connection with McVay was ultimately different from what outsiders may have assumed.
Goff, who played five seasons with the Rams, said, “I don’t believe it nearly undermined the way people thought.” “And I believe that contributed to the final uncertainty. I don’t believe it corroded in that manner. Again, I appreciate his saying that, and that’s admirable of him, but it was done the way it was done, and it’s done.”
For the first time since 1993, the Lions will visit Los Angeles, and defensive end Michael Brockers and defensive backs coach Aubrey Pleasant will be reunited.
Goff still has the second-highest completion percentage (63.4%) and the second-highest passing rating in Rams history (91.5). Following his selection as the No. 1 overall pick in 2016, he was named captain three times.
“Excitement. Excitement. It’s a different game, “Goff said. “Again, I believe the simple truth and reality is that we need to win, regardless of who we’re playing this week, regardless of mine or Brock’s or anybody else’s history with this club and the Rams. It’s more of a fact that we have to win, and we can’t really concentrate on that.”
