On their active rosters, several NFL clubs have two quarterbacks: a starting quarterback and a backup quarterback. The Los Angeles Rams opted out of that method, promoting Bryce Perkins from the practice squad to a coveted position on the 53-man roster.
The young quarterback doesn’t appear to mind being the backup to the backup. Perkins, who has a lucrative deal and a basic salary of $660,000 for the 2021 season, is likely content to wait his time while learning all he can from Rams starting quarterback Matthew Stafford.

The University of Virginia (UVA) quarterback is in his debut season with the Los Angeles Rams at the age of 24. After spending last season as an undrafted free agent, he won a spot on the 53-man initial roster.
Perkins got a lot of action in the preseason when Stafford was recovering from a thumb injury and backup John Wolford was still sidelined following an appendectomy.
The Rams’ third-string quarterback, ranked third on the depth chart, started all three preseason games in 2021, including the last two. He completed 56 of 91 throws for 451 yards and three touchdowns with one interception, according to Pro Football Reference. He rushed for 114 yards on 22 carries.
“I think Bryce can be extremely happy of the body of work he put on video during the three weeks of the preseason,” Rams head coach Sean McVay said, according to Fan Nation.
Perkins was named to the Rams’ first-team roster.
Despite three preseason defeats, Perkins led the NFC quarterbacks in passing yards with 451 yards. Perkins had committed to Arizona State after graduating from high school in 2015, according to 247 Sports. He had to redshirt his first year after fracturing vertebrae in his neck. He was moved to the Virginia Cavaliers after missing the whole 2016 season.
Perkins recovered completely and went on to become a record-setting quarterback for the University of Virginia. He led the club to the ACC Coastal Division Championship in 2019, throwing for 323 yards and four touchdowns in the school’s first Orange Bowl appearance.
The Rams selected Perkins in the 2020 NFL Draft. Perkins was “sixth in the country for total yards (4,299) as a senior at Virginia before the Rams signed him as an undrafted rookie,” according to the Orange County Register.
Perkins signed a reserve/futures deal with the Rams in January 2021 as a member of the practice squad. According to Spotrac, it had an annual monetary value of $40,882. When the quarterback secured a spot on the Rams’ roster, he agreed to a new two-year deal for $1,485,000. His yearly basic pay for 2021 is $660,000. In 2023, Perkins will be a free agent.
For many quarterbacks, assisting Stafford and his teammates is a dream job.
Perkins is unlikely to see much play in the regular season now that Stafford and Wolford are back on the roster and have healed from their prior ailments.
Perkins seemed unfazed, since he now possesses one of the most favorable roles among young quarterbacks. He’ll make a lot of money, won’t have to take a lot of blows, and will be able to learn from veteran NFL quarterbacks. It’s not a walk-on role for a third-stringer.
Perkins was added to the 53-man roster by the Rams, according to LAFB, “after he exhibited big game talent during the preseason.” He was “too excellent to risk another club taking him off waivers,” they said. According to ESPN, the third-string quarterback is now inactive as of Week 4.
