ATASCADERO – A group of high school students interested in STEM and engineering founded the Atascadero Greybots in 2002. They’re a high school robotics team that participates in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition every year. This tournament brings together high school students from 34 nations to participate in a challenge that was issued to them at the beginning of January.
Other regional tournaments are also attended by the Greybots. They compete in two regional tournaments and the World Championship in Houston, Texas, throughout a normal season. The Greybots have won the World Championship on three occasions, in 2011, 2017, and 2019. Only seven teams in the world, out of a total of 4,000, have won three world championships.
“I joined the Greybots because I wanted to pursue an extracurricular activity that included STEM while I was in high school,” said Marvin Velazquez, a current Greybots member. “It just so happened that the Greybots were the most friendly to a child like me.”

The Greybots have a number of mentors who assist them, and the most of them were formerly members of the team as students. According to Charlotte Maples, a current member of the Greybots, parents assist as well, but the kids are the driving force.
“I joined the Greybots because I like being a part of an atmosphere that promotes STEM and allows me to explore my interests in computer science,” Maples said. “This team has taught me a variety of real-world skills, including communication, leadership, time management, determination, and engineering thinking. Being a member of this team provides me with an atmosphere in which I can learn, develop, and experience things that many of my classmates do not.”
“This team has given me a variety of skills that I can use in the real world,” said Jacob Rossel, another Greybots member. “I’ve also met and stayed in touch with a variety of individuals from all over the globe, including Canada, Mexico, Hawaii, and Japan.”
“The team is significant to me because it provided me with a space to truly flourish,” Velazquez said, “and I want to do the same for other kids, so I make it my mission to assist every child on this team and for them to help me to become a better person overall.”
Until COVID made things more difficult, the Greybots had never had difficulty recruiting recruits for their squad. They are now seeking assistance in recruiting new members for this year’s squad.
